Police hunt group after worker assaulted in Otangarei store robbery

Worker violently assaulted by group of males in Otangarei

Police have launched an investigation after a store worker was assaulted during an aggravated robbery in Otangarei in Whangarei on Wednesday night.

Officers were called to a shop on William Jones Drive shortly after 7.25pm, following reports that a group of males armed with weapons – excluding firearms – had entered the premises, made demands and assaulted an employee, who suffered minor injuries.

The offenders fled on foot toward Taraire Crescent, taking cash and cigarettes. Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer of Whangārei CIB said police are working urgently to identify the group, describing the violence as unacceptable and thanking members of the public who have already shared information. He urged anyone who witnessed the incident or saw suspicious activity in the area to come forward, and appealed for reports from anyone offered cheap cigarettes.

Police will maintain an increased presence in the neighbourhood as enquiries continue. Information can be provided via the 105 line, quoting file number 251210/5639, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
