Willis–Richardson debate in doubt

The Nicola Willis - Ruth Richardson debate unlikely to go ahead

A proposed public debate between Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Taxpayers Union chair Ruth Richardson now appears unlikely to proceed, after Richardson signalled she would not take part in what she described as a political distraction.

Willis last week issued a challenge to Richardson to debate fiscal policy “any time, anywhere”, a pointed invitation given Richardson’s legacy as the architect of the 1991 “Mother of all Budgets”. While Richardson initially dismissed the idea, she later agreed in principle. However, the two sides failed to agree on a format, venue or moderator.

Tensions escalated following Wednesday’s Half-Year Economic and Fiscal Update, where Willis openly criticised the Taxpayers Union’s policy proposals, saying they would result in widespread hardship. She reiterated her willingness to debate, offering short-notice availability and saying she was indifferent to who chaired the discussion.

Richardson later rejected the proposed arrangements, claiming Willis had sought to stage the debate at Parliament under the chairmanship of Winston Peters, rather than in a neutral studio setting. She accused Willis of attempting to divert attention from what she called the worst fiscal outlook in three decades.

Arguing that the latest figures showed no credible route back to surplus, Richardson withdrew from the debate, saying she would not participate in a “circus or sideshow” designed to obscure economic reality.
