Kenyan double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet shattered the women’s 5,000m world record at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona, clocking an astonishing 13 minutes and 54 seconds to become the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier.
The 24-year-old, who claimed 5,000m and 10,000m gold at the Paris Olympics, improved her own record—set in the same race a year ago—by 19 seconds. Reflecting on her achievement, Chebet expressed her delight, saying, “Two races in Barcelona and two world records, can I ask for more?”
The feat caps a stellar year in which she also broke the 10,000m world record in May, secured her second Diamond League title in September, and set her sights on further glory at the World Championships in Tokyo next year.
