Charges against Scottie Scheffler, the world number one golfer, have been dismissed by the Jefferson County Attorney’s office following his arrest prior to the second round of the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.
Scheffler faced several serious charges including felony second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and ignoring traffic signals from an officer. The arrest occurred under dramatic circumstances when Scheffler was entering the Valhalla Golf Club and did not comply with an officer’s halt during a traffic control operation, leading to a physical altercation.
The decision to drop all charges was influenced by new evidence, including a video revealing Scheffler’s interaction with police where he expressed confusion and fear, not realising the individual in a yellow jacket was a police officer.
This misunderstanding escalated the situation, exacerbated by the officer’s failure to identify himself properly and the misuse of a flashlight. Following the incident, Scheffler was quickly released, allowing him to continue competing, and he finished tied for eighth at the PGA Championship. In his latest performance he tied for second at the Charles Schwab Challenge, although he opted out of the following RBC Canadian Open.
