England moved closer to victory in the opening Test at Lord’s despite rain severely limiting play on day three, with the Black Caps ending the day in deep trouble at 55-5, still needing 199 runs to reach a target of 254.
Only a brief period of cricket was possible before the weather forced an early finish, but England seamer Ollie Robinson made the most of the conditions, removing both Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell to take his match tally to seven wickets in his Test comeback.
Ravindra’s difficult match continued after scores of 0 and 8, while Mitchell fell lbw after a review failed to overturn the decision. With New Zealand’s batting line-up under pressure and England requiring just five more wickets, the hosts appear firmly in control heading into day four, with better weather forecast.
