Greyhound Racing NZ (GRNZ) has filed for a judicial review of the government’s decision to ban greyhound racing from July 2026, arguing the process was rushed and lacked proper consultation.

The organisation claims officials and ministers had predetermined the outcome, failed to consider key reports, and misrepresented evidence.

GRNZ says the ban, affecting around 1000 people and 3000 dogs, was made without due diligence and wants the High Court to halt implementation while the review proceeds.

CEO Edward Rennell criticised the government’s “cavalier” approach and called for an urgent hearing to provide clarity for those impacted.
