Teenage second-rower Leka Halasima secured a dramatic 20-15 win for the New Zealand Warriors over the Newcastle Knights with a stunning 40-metre try in the final seconds at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Trailing most of the match, the Warriors were still behind 15-14 when Tanah Boyd’s two-point field goal attempt was charged down, only for the loose ball to fall to Halasima, who broke through fatigued defenders to score the match-winner.
Earlier, the Warriors struck first through Adam Pompey, but Newcastle responded with three unconverted tries to lead 12-6 at halftime.
Despite missed opportunities from both sides in a tense final 10 minutes, Halasima’s brilliance sealed the win, keeping the Warriors fourth on the ladder ahead of next week’s clash with the Titans.
