Harry Brook’s heroics save England on Day 2 in Christchurch

England faced early setbacks at Hagley Oval, slipping to a precarious 45 for 3 at lunch, but Harry Brook’s masterclass turned the tide in a spectacular fashion.

The young batter walked in immediately after the interval and ended the day unbeaten on a commanding 132, earning a standing ovation from the appreciative crowd.

Brook’s innings was pivotal, stabilising England with two crucial partnerships: a 151-run stand with Ollie Pope and an unbroken 97-run partnership with captain Ben Stokes. His composed aggression and ability to capitalise on opportunities highlighted his innings, though New Zealand’s fielding woes played a significant role.

The hosts were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field, dropping six catches—four of them off Brook’s bat—which could have drastically altered the day’s outcome.

Despite the blunders, New Zealand had their moment of brilliance courtesy of Glenn Phillips, whose extraordinary athleticism in the gully produced a stunning catch to dismiss Pope, leaving the crowd in awe.

For England, Brook’s innings has provided a much-needed platform, while New Zealand will rue their missed chances heading into Day 3.
