The Highlanders survived a late surge from Moana Pasifika to clinch a thrilling 31-29 win in Albany.
Nathan Hastie opened the scoring with a stunning try just two minutes in, but the hosts responded through Sione Mafile’o and Willy Havili, though missed conversions left the score tied after 20 minutes. The Highlanders then unleashed a dominant stretch, with tries from Tanielu Tele’a, Mitch Dunshea, and a 90-meter intercept from Caleb Tangitau.
Moana Pasifika fought back as Ardie Savea’s brilliant 50-meter dash reignited their hopes, followed by Havili’s second try and a well-executed set play sending Semisi Ta’eito over, cutting the deficit to two with five minutes left. Despite the pressure, the Highlanders retained possession deep in Moana territory, holding firm until the final siren.
