The Highlanders came from behind to beat Moana Pasifika 36-28 in Queenstown in the their first hit-out before the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Initially trailing by 21-0 after Moana Pasifika scored three quick tries, the Highlanders managed to turn the game around, with Captain Sean Withy initiating the comeback.
Despite the early setback, the Highlanders’ defense tightened, and their offense found its rhythm, showcasing Pacific flair with tries from new fullback Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens, Timoci Tavatavanawai, and Jona Nareki.
The team’s performance, particularly in the later stages of the game, highlighted potential areas for improvement, coach Clarke Dermody said after the game.
The Highlanders are set to face the Hurricanes in another pre-season game before their regular-season opener against Moana Pasifika on February 24.
