The Kangaroos began their Pacific Championships campaign with a hard-fought 18-0 victory over Tonga at Suncorp Stadium.
Tom Trbojevic made an impressive return to international rugby league after six years, running for 227 metres and scoring the opening try from a 70-metre intercept.
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow also stood out, slicing through Tonga’s defense for a try and earning the player of the match award for his dynamic performance.
Tonga had their chances, but the Kangaroos’ defense held firm, particularly during critical moments when Tonga threatened to score. In the second half, Tabuai-Fidow’s try in the 52nd minute extended Australia’s lead, and Zac Lomax’s penalty goal increased the gap to 14-0.
Despite their best efforts, Tonga’s errors, including a disallowed try by Keaon Koloamatangi, kept them scoreless throughout the match.
Tom Dearden sealed the victory with a try in the final minute on his Test debut, capping off a dominant defensive display by Australia.
The Kangaroos will now face the Kiwis next week in Christchurch, where a win would secure their place in the Pacific Championships final. Tonga, meanwhile, must defeat the Kiwis in Week 3 to avoid a relegation match.
