Hurricanes edge Highlanders 18-20 in Dunedin

The Hurricanes secured a tense 18-20 win over the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium, holding off relentless late pressure and a missed drop goal attempt by Sam Gilbert in the final moments.

A stunning 62nd-minute try from Ruben Love, set up by Peter Umaga-Jensen and Cam Roigard, proved decisive in a tightly contested match.

Early tries from Kini Naholo and Caleb Tangitau added excitement, but the game ultimately turned into a gritty battle dominated by forward play and strategic kicking.

Hurricanes co-captain Du’Plessis Kirifi was instrumental in defense, securing a crucial turnover in the dying stages.

While the Hurricanes celebrated a much-needed win, controversy lingered over a possible high tackle that went unpunished, denying the Highlanders a late shot at goal. The Highlanders will regroup against the Reds next weekend, while the Hurricanes head into a bye.
