Port Vale F.C. produced one of the biggest shocks of the FA Cup by defeating Sunderland A.F.C. to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
The League One side, sitting bottom of the third tier and struggling domestically, held firm after Ben Waine’s looping header gave them the lead from a corner, with Sunderland unable to find a breakthrough despite dominating possession.
The Premier League visitors hit the post early through Eliezer Mayenda and pushed harder after halftime, but Port Vale’s disciplined defending and counter-attacking intensity frustrated them throughout.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg also survived a controversial second-half challenge with only a yellow card, as Vale held on to complete a famous victory over opponents ranked 57 places above them in the English football pyramid.
