Liverpool honoured the memory of Diogo Jota during their return to Anfield on Monday, following the forward’s tragic death in a car crash in Spain in July alongside his brother, Andre Silva.
The pre-season friendlies against Athletic Bilbao were marked by poignant tributes, including wreath-laying by club legend Phil Thomson and Bilbao president Jon Uriarte, emotional banners reading “Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and a 20th-minute match pause with applause from fans and players.
Jota’s No. 20 shirt has been retired, and manager Arne Slot praised the outpouring of support while vowing continued backing for Jota’s grieving family. Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games for the Reds, contributing to multiple trophies during his time at the club.
