Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, capping a difficult season that has seen the defending powerhouse eliminated from NFL play-off contention for the first time since 2014.
The injury occurred late in a 16–13 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City’s third straight defeat, leaving the team 6–8 with three regular-season games still to play but no mathematical path to the post-season.
The loss and injury raise questions about the future of one of the NFL’s most dominant eras, with coach Andy Reid having led the Chiefs to 10 consecutive play-off appearances and five Super Bowl trips, while Mahomes had reached at least the AFC Championship game in every season since becoming starter in 2018.
