England head coach Brendon McCullum has said he wants to continue in the role but acknowledged his future is not in his control after England slumped to a 3–0 deficit in the Ashes following defeat in Adelaide.
Despite being contracted through to the 2027 50-over World Cup, McCullum said decisions on his position rest with the England and Wales Cricket Board, while captain Ben Stokes has also publicly backed staying on.
Appointed in 2022, McCullum initially oversaw a dramatic turnaround in England’s Test fortunes, but results have since stalled, with the team failing to win major series against Australia or India and now facing the prospect of a 5–0 Ashes whitewash.
McCullum said England had developed a clear identity but admitted they are “not the finished article,” urging his players to show fight in the final two Tests as selection questions loom ahead of the Boxing Day match in Melbourne.
Asked if he believes he will be in charge for the home summer next year, McCullum said: “I don’t know. It’s not really up to me, is it?
“I’ll just keep trying to do the job, trying to learn the lessons I haven’t quite got right here and try to make some adjustments. Those questions are for someone else, not for me.”
