Russian NHL star Alex Ovechkin has equalled Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record of 894 career goals, becoming the joint-highest scorer in NHL history.
The 39-year-old Washington Capitals star hit the milestone with a power play goal in the third quarter against the Chicago Blackhawks, his second of the game, propelling his team to a 4-3 lead.
Celebrated by teammates and fans, Ovechkin’s achievement is especially impressive given his recent leg injury that sidelined him for weeks.
An emotional Ovechkin expressed gratitude to fans and family, while Gretzky, present at the game, received a warm ovation as his historic record was matched.
Ovechkin now eyes sole possession of the top spot in Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders.
