New Zealand seized control of the second Test against England at The Oval, finishing day two with a commanding 169-run first-innings lead after reducing the hosts to 222-6.
Glenn Phillips produced a superb maiden Test century, scoring 100, while Kyle Jamieson added a valuable 41 as the Black Caps posted 391.
England briefly steadied through Emilio Gay’s 53 and stand-in captain Joe Root’s 46, but New Zealand’s pace attack struck regularly, with Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke taking two wickets apiece. O’Rourke’s hostile late spell exposed England’s lower order, leaving debutant Jordan Cox unbeaten on 22 with limited support remaining.
Aside from a dropped catch by Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand were disciplined throughout the day and are well placed to push for victory heading into day three.
