Saudi Arabia is reportedly developing the world’s first “sky stadium” as part of its NEOM mega-project, designed to host matches for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The proposed NEOM Stadium, also referred to as the “Sky Stadium,” will be powered by solar and wind energy, seat 46,000 spectators, and be suspended approximately 350 metres above the desert floor. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and finish by 2032, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s World Cup preparations.
According to Construction Review, the futuristic venue will be built within *The Line*, NEOM’s linear smart city, and aims to set new standards for sustainable sports infrastructure. FIFA has given preliminary endorsement to the project, though experts note that the stadium’s extreme elevation and remote location present major engineering challenges. Despite broader delays in the NEOM initiative, officials maintain that the stadium remains a priority ahead of the 2034 tournament.
