Google’s AI Mode sparks fears of ‘open web collapse’ as search enters a ‘new era’

Google’s introduction of “AI Mode” in its search engine is being hailed as a revolutionary step toward a more efficient, AI-driven internet experience.

The new feature, which offers users AI-generated summaries in place of traditional search results, is currently optional but expected to become the default.

While Google claims AI Mode will expand user engagement and diversify information discovery, critics warn it could devastate the open web by drastically reducing traffic to independent websites, threatening publisher revenue and undermining the ecosystem that has supported online content for decades.

Industry experts fear it may push creators toward less informative, monetisation-driven platforms like social media, where “content quality may suffer”.

The broader concern is that the rise of AI-generated answers could fundamentally reshape how information is accessed online—transforming the web into a “machine web” designed for AI consumption rather than human exploration.

Critics accuse Google of exploiting web content without compensation and warn of declining content diversity, reduced transparency, and a worsening filter bubble effect.

Though Google defends its approach and insists the web is thriving, some publishers and technologists are calling for resistance, including blocking AI crawlers unless platforms pay for data use.

  2. I asked mr google about two people. The reply was that Joel Little was a member of parliament in New Zealand and Andrew Little was a record producer. No sh*t.

  3. I do not use google becuase google tracks you and reports your browsing history to business for money. I know this because the Wellington based company i work for provides me with leads.

Time to reinstall your PC and never go near google or any of its associated partners. Never click on a link emailed to you for any resson.

The reason why government does not regulate this privacy breach is because government is the biggest user of it.

You dont have 500 friends. You have family and say 3 to 5 close mates. Get off your devices and go enjoy the company of your family and friends in person. Your life will be more fulfilling.
