St. Bede’s College in Christchurch has decided to cancel its centennial celebration due to allegations of historical sexual abuse by a former teacher.

The individual, whose identity is currently under suppression by the High Court, faces 11 charges related to incidents allegedly involving four students at St Bede’s College approximately two decades ago.

The charges encompass a range of offenses, including sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, indecent assault on a boy aged between 12 and 16, and indecent assault on a male over the age of 16.

In a communication to the school community, Jon McDowall, the rector of St Bede’s College, announced the cancellation of the planned Boarding 100 celebrations set for April stating, “Our focus remains on supporting those impacted and fostering a safe, supportive environment for all members of our community—past, present, and future.” He further noted that the timing was not right for such festivities given the current circumstances.

However, the school plans to proceed with a 100th anniversary dinner in August.

In a statement to state media, he explained that the decision to cancel the event was made out of respect for those affected by the allegations.

Police said the accused had allegedly targeted students boarding at the school during the period in question.
