US Congresswoman Nancy Mace has called for Lindsay Clancy to be publicly executed for killing her three young children, injecting herself into the fierce national debate surrounding the Massachusetts mother’s mental state and criminal responsibility.
Clancy, a former nurse, has admitted strangling her five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson and eight-month-old son Callan at their family home in 2023 before attempting to take her own life. Her defence maintains that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and was therefore not criminally responsible for the killings.
Her trial ended without a verdict earlier this month after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision.
Mace, a Republican member of Congress, rejected the suggestion that Clancy’s mental illness should shield her from the ultimate punishment.
“Her children are dead, she should be dead too,” Mace told TMZ on Monday, calling for the death penalty to be imposed and carried out in public.
The congresswoman said she was indifferent to the method used and argued that a public execution would send a “warning to women everywhere” about the consequences of killing their children.
The Clancy case has become deeply polarising in the United States. Prosecutors contend that the killings were calculated, pointing to evidence that Clancy sent her husband away from the house on errands before strangling the children in the basement. Prosecution experts have also challenged the psychosis defence, maintaining that her conduct involved a sequence of purposeful decisions.
Critics of Clancy’s defence argue that mental illness may provide an explanation for her behaviour without necessarily eliminating criminal accountability for the deaths of three defenceless children.
Her supporters take a markedly different position. Clancy has gained considerable backing from advocates concerned about postpartum psychiatric disorders, who regard the tragedy as an extreme manifestation of psychosis and shortcomings in maternal mental-health treatment.
A fundraising campaign established to assist Clancy’s parents, who have helped finance her defence, has reportedly collected more than $1.2 million.
The controversy escalated following revelations about the jury’s deliberations. Jurors reportedly stood 11-1 in favour of finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, but the sole dissenting juror prevented a unanimous verdict after seven days of deliberation.
That juror subsequently became the subject of intense online attention and was reportedly doxxed. Supporters have since raised almost $200,000 for him, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has publicly offered him “asylum.”
Some fellow jurors have openly challenged the holdout’s reasoning, with one saying he struggled to move beyond the undeniable fact that Clancy had killed her children.
Clancy’s defence team is now seeking dismissal of the charges rather than allowing prosecutors another opportunity to put her on trial. Authorities have not yet announced whether they will pursue a retrial.
The case is scheduled to return to court on September 29, with the legal battle unfolding alongside an increasingly heated national argument over punishment, insanity and the role of severe postpartum mental illness in determining criminal responsibility.

Women have been killing men for years, and other women / family members as well.
It used to be that after a woman gave birth, she would remain in the hospital for a week, as this gave health care professionals in Obstetrics and OB/GYN to monitor a new mother for these effects.
That doesn’t happen anymore…

Given the time it will take for appeals over several courts, I can’t see justice for those kids happening for sometime.

You got the jury back to front. The 11 wanted a not guilty verdict, while the 1 wanted a guilty verdict as the accused had admitted to the murders.
