Devastating Himalayan flood kills more than 150 in Nepal, hundreds missing

A catastrophic flash flood has ripped through northern Nepal near the Tibetan border, killing at least 157 people in Nepal and leaving hundreds more missing after a wall of water swept away villages, homes, bridges, roads and hydropower facilities.

Three deaths have also been reported across the border in China, where a landslide devastated the Gyirong Port checkpoint and authorities reported further casualties and missing people. Nepal’s Tourism Board said 384 tourists were unaccounted for, including 291 foreigners, although officials cautioned that some may simply be stranded without communications; those listed include more than 100 Indians, 54 Americans, 17 Malaysians, 12 Britons and nationals from several other countries.

The disaster struck around 9am when water surged through the Bhote Koshi River into Rasuwa district, heavily affecting Syapru Besi and Timure before flooding moved downstream into the Trishuli River. Officials are investigating whether an ice-and-rock avalanche created a temporary natural dam on the Lhende River that subsequently collapsed, possibly around the time of an earthquake, unleashing the torrent. Nepal has deployed troops and helicopters for rescue operations, while China has sent emergency personnel to the Gyirong area and closed the border road.

Communities farther downstream have been warned to move to higher ground, with authorities in India also evacuating vulnerable areas and preparing emergency assistance.
