A South Korean court has sentenced former prime minister Han Duck-soo to 23 years in prison for his involvement in ex-president Yoon Suk-yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law in December 2024, marking the first conviction linked to the brief but dramatic episode.
The Seoul Central District Court found Han guilty of aiding an insurrection and perjury, ruling that he breached his constitutional duty by convening a cabinet meeting and appearing to support orders to cut power and water to media outlets.
Yoon’s declaration of martial law was swiftly overturned by parliament after lawmakers defied security blockades to convene, while troops declined to enforce the order amid street protests.
Yoon himself, who was impeached following the incident, awaits a verdict next month and potentially faces a life sentence or the death penalty.
