Israeli military lawyers reportedly raised doubts about the legality of the country’s operations in Gaza during the first year of the war, according to U.S. intelligence cited by Reuters.
Five former American officials told the outlet that intelligence shared with senior policymakers indicated Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) lawyers feared evidence showed deliberate targeting of civilians and aid workers — concerns that clashed with Israel’s public defense of its tactics.
The revelations come as Israel faces genocide accusations before both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, following a campaign that has killed over 68,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Despite these findings, Washington continued to support Israel, even after acknowledging “reasonable concerns” that international humanitarian law may have been breached.
