Machete-wielding man injures 31 in Germany after arson and vehicle ramming attacks

A 41-year-old Syrian national caused chaos in the German city of Essen on Saturday, injuring 31 people, including two children in critical condition, during a series of arson and ramming attacks, according to reports on Sunday.

The attacks began at approximately 5:10 p.m. when the man set fire to a residential building at the intersection of Altenessener Strasse and Pielsticker Strasse. After fleeing the scene, he drove a short distance and set fire to a second residence. Emergency services reported that 31 individuals were wounded in the fires, while police confirmed at least 30 injuries. Some residents had to throw children from windows to safety as the flames spread.

Following the arson attacks, the suspect drove to Katernberger Strasse, where he rammed his van into a store, reversed, and struck the building again. The violence escalated when the man exited the vehicle, brandishing a machete and threatening nearby civilians. Bystanders captured the scene on video, showing them throwing objects in an attempt to fend him off.

The suspect, who sustained burns on his hands, was apprehended by police a few metres from the store.

Authorities revealed that he was known to law enforcement prior to the incident. Police have launched an investigation to determine the connections between the attacks and the suspect’s motives.

  1. They always seem to be “known by the police” after the fact? He will be freed by lunch time, with an apology for any inconvenience caused.
