Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski has claimed a narrow victory in Poland’s presidential election, with an exit poll showing him at 50.3% against conservative rival Karol Nawrocki’s 49.7%—a result within the poll’s 3% margin of error.
While Trzaskowski declared victory, Nawrocki insisted the result was too close to call, hoping for a turnaround when official results are released Monday.
A win for Trzaskowski, a liberal pro-EU figure and ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, would remove the presidential veto threat that has blocked key reforms.
Nawrocki, backed by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, ran a populist campaign but was dogged by scandals. The outcome holds significant implications for Poland’s political direction and its relationship with the European Union.
