Pressure growing on Trudeau to resign – media reports

Trudeau rssignation news

A faction of Canadian MPs from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party is reportedly organising to call for his resignation as party leader, according to recent local media reports.

The group, which has been quietly mobilising over the past ten days, plans to formally request Trudeau to step down during the upcoming caucus meeting next Wednesday.

The movement remains internal for now, with MPs discussing the matter in private.

CTV News, which broke the story, reported that it had spoken with 35 Liberal MPs, five of whom confirmed their support for Trudeau’s ousting, while others have voiced their dissatisfaction anonymously.

The growing discontent comes in the wake of significant by-election losses in Toronto and Montreal, traditionally strong Liberal districts, raising concerns about Trudeau’s leadership ahead of the next federal election slated for October 2025.

Montreal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather acknowledged the importance of internal party discussions about leadership, stating, “I support whoever is leader of my party at all times, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a robust caucus discussion about who the best person to lead us in the next election is.”

Other MPs have been more direct in expressing their disapproval. Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown, said that many voters in his district have grown increasingly dissatisfied with Trudeau’s leadership. “The message that I’ve been getting loud and clear – and more and more strongly as time goes by – is that it is time for [Trudeau] to go. And I agree,” Casey stated.

While the movement is still unfolding, it signals growing unrest within the Liberal Party as the leadership question intensifies ahead of the next federal election.
