A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet near Mount Everest, killing at least 126 people and injuring 188, according to Chinese state media.
The quake, which hit the Himalayan foothills early Tuesday, caused significant damage to over 1,000 buildings in Shigatse city and Tingri county, a popular hub for Everest climbers.
Videos captured collapsed homes and rescue workers distributing blankets amid freezing temperatures expected to plummet to -16°C (3.2°F).
The tremors were felt as far as Nepal and northern India. Despite numerous aftershocks,
Chinese experts assured that the likelihood of a larger quake is low.
Power and water services in the area have been disrupted, and local authorities have launched large-scale rescue operations, supported by drones and air force units.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for intensified search and rescue efforts, while the Dalai Lama offered prayers for the victims.
The earthquake revived memories of Nepal’s catastrophic 2015 disaster. Although Kathmandu residents felt strong tremors, no major casualties were reported.
Everest sightseeing tours in the area have been suspended for safety reasons.
