Sarkozy to serve prison term in solitary confinement

Sarkozy imprisonment news

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to serve his prison sentence in solitary confinement after being convicted of accepting illegal campaign funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, according to AFP.

The 70-year-old was sentenced on September 25 to five years in prison for his role in a 2005 conspiracy to secure secret financing for his 2007 presidential campaign. The court cited the “exceptional gravity” of the crime and ordered immediate imprisonment, even if an appeal is lodged.

Sarkozy, who served as France’s leader from 2007 to 2012, becomes the first former head of state of an EU country to be jailed. He is expected to begin his sentence at Paris’s La Santé prison, where sources say he will be placed in a nine-square-metre solitary cell to limit contact with other inmates.

Calling the verdict an “injustice,” Sarkozy maintains his innocence and plans to appeal, with his lawyers likely to seek house arrest instead.

The case stems from allegations made by Gaddafi’s son in 2011 that Libya secretly funneled €50 million to Sarkozy’s campaign — a claim formally investigated since 2013. The former president has already been convicted in two separate corruption and campaign finance cases, both resulting in house arrest.

  1. The toxic dwarf should consider himself lucky to be confined in solitude. I can think of no greater evil than the betrayal and murder of Ghadddafi by this ingrate, after receiving some $50m in campaign funds from the very man he planned to off.
So he doesn’t like solitary? Lock him up with the genocidaire Netanyahu, give each a bayonet and let evil run it’s course.

  2. ….the first former head of state of an EU country to be jailed for corruption.”
There will be many more. In other cuntries too.
They try to run, but they cannot hide.
Not even in Boston or Ireland or Otago.
