Swiss referendum set to decide population cap as immigration debate intensifies

Swiss immigration referendum to take place in June

Swiss voters will go to the polls on June 14 to decide whether to introduce a population cap of 10 million, following a proposal driven by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP).

The initiative comes as Switzerland’s population has surged to more than 9.1 million, growing far faster than neighbouring EU nations over the past decade as the country attracted both highly skilled and lower-skilled workers.

The SVP argues the “population explosion” is pushing up housing costs, putting pressure on public services and contributing to declining living standards.

Under the proposal, authorities would be required to act if the permanent population exceeds 9.5 million, including restricting new arrivals such as asylum seekers and some family reunifications, and potentially withdrawing from EU free-movement rules if numbers pass 10 million.

The government, most other political parties and business groups oppose the plan, warning it could damage the economy and force companies to move overseas, with Economiesuisse calling it a “chaos initiative.” However, public sentiment appears divided, with polling indicating about 48% support for the cap, while economists note that falling real wages and stagnant GDP per capita in recent years have increased pressure around immigration and living costs.

  1. We have an Indian woman who walks past our house every day with her kids. She wears a sari. Lately she has been accompanied by an old Indian lady- so we have now imported immigrants elderly parents.

My son’s Filipino flatmates elderly grandmother has just arrived to live in New Zealand – permanently.

WHO is paying for these people’s pensions? Health costs? They have contributed NOTHING yet here they are utilising OUR infrastructure, and social system built up by OUR ancestors and currently being paid for by people who despite being New Zealanders may them themselves miss out on services or have to work longer to pay for it. It’s CRIMINAL what has been done to our country.

We’ve turned into an Indian and Asian outreach.

More disturbingly we don’t even deport foreign criminals 😡

  2. Whats disturbing is importing uber, truck & bus drivers as they’re close to all being driver less. Then there’s robotics which will make 10’s of thousands redundant by 2030 if Elon is anything to go by. My point is we have far too many low pay unskilled workers who’s jobs will be obsolete meanwhile prices sky rocket with power & fuel price increases with an ever increasing populace who can’t get to see a doctor due to unplanned un-targeted skilled immigration

  3. Oh so no imported criminals and free loaders, what a decidedly revolutionary idea. Maybe we could try voting for decent govt here in NZ that follows suit and kick out the treacherous globalists who want to keep importing people to ensure labour costs are kept down and hide the fact actual New Zealanders are leaving in droves.
