Former leader of the English Defence League Tommy Robinson was charged under the Terrorism Act after handing himself in to Folkestone Police Station on Friday.
The charge, related to failing to provide the PIN to his mobile phone, falls under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, which allows authorities to question individuals at UK ports for potential links to terrorism.
Robinson was remanded in custody and will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday.
The arrest comes ahead of a major rally of UK patriots in London on Saturday (local time), where police anticipate tens of thousands of attendees, with counter-protests expected from opposition groups.
Robinson’s detention follows an outstanding warrant from July, when he missed a contempt of court hearing.
Addressing supporters outside the police station, Robinson said his arrest was “totally controlled media” and insisted he was only “reporting the truth.”
The Metropolitan Police, meanwhile, are preparing for possible unrest at Saturday’s march, which Robinson’s supporters are framing as an effort to “Unite the Kingdom.” He is also set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in November regarding previous charges of contempt of court.
