U.S. President Donald Trump says he’s willing to open talks with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as the two countries edge closer to a military confrontation.
Speaking in Florida, Trump claimed Caracas was helping “narcoterrorist” cartels smuggle drugs and release violent criminals into the US, allegations Maduro firmly rejects.
Trump noted that the State Department’s terrorist designation for the ‘Cartel de los Soles’ gives Washington the option to strike targets in Venezuela, though he insisted no such decision has been made.
“We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll see how that turns out,” Trump said on Sunday in Florida before boarding a flight to Washington. “They would like to talk,” he added.
The US has already targeted more than 20 suspected cartel vessels in Caribbean waters and deployed a major naval presence, while boosting the bounty on Maduro to $50 million. Maduro, warning against another “endless war,” has put Venezuela’s military on high alert and launched drills in response to the US buildup.
