U.K. to impose 20-year wait for refugees seeking permanent residency

The UK government will require people granted asylum to wait 20 years before applying for permanent residency, under a major policy overhaul Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce on Monday.

Refugees will receive only temporary permission to stay, with their status reviewed every 2.5 years and those from countries later deemed safe expected to return.

The plan—modelled on Denmark’s system—is aimed at deterring small-boat crossings but has already drawn criticism from refugee advocates and some Labour MPs, who call the measures harsh and ineffective.

Mahmood argues the reforms are needed to stop “illegal migration” and prevent further division in the country, as Channel crossings this year have surpassed 32,000.
