Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was caught in the middle of an Israeli airstrike at Sana’a Airport in Yemen.
Tedros recounted the ordeal, stating, “As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment.” He detailed the chaos that ensued, noting that one of the WHO’s plane crew members was injured in the attack. Furthermore, he reported that at least two fatalities occurred at the airport due to the strikes.
The damage was extensive, affecting critical infrastructure at the airport.
“The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged,” he explained, showing how close he and his colleagues were to the location of the attack.
