Crown appeals sentence of convicted rapist Jayden Desmond Meyer

Jayden Desmond Meyer news

Meyer was convicted of raping four 15 year old girls in 2020 and 2021, when he was aged 16.

Tauranga District Court judge Christopher Harding sentenced Meyer to 9 months Home Detention. The Crown Prosecutor supported the sentence, despite accepting imprisonment for ‘many years’ would have been the norm.

The sentence sparked public outrage.

The Crown argued the sentence was ‘manifestly inadequate’ and a ‘significant error of law.’ Additionally, Judge Harding ‘did not follow orthodox sentencing methodology. He did not specify a starting point, quantify the overall discount, or state a nominal end sentence.’

Meyer’s lawyer Rachel Adams argued that changing the sentence now, after her client was two months into it and was making progress with SAFE, a programme for violent sexual offenders, would be ‘inhumane’. ‘The Crown are the Crown. They have not simply acquiesced, they have promoted the sentence throughout,’ she said.

High Court Justice Sally Fitzgerald has reserved her decision.

  1. Changing the sentence now would be inhumane??!!
Oh I get it…HE is the real victim here, not the four 15 yo girls he raped and traumatised and who will have to live with the repercussions for the rest of their lives.
Oh well…they probably made it up anyway.
