“Where the storytelling traditions of country and folk meet the raw energy of 90’s rock” – Frankston Music Network.
Following a successful string of sold-out national dates supporting ARIA award winning country artist, Fanny Lumsden, Mornington Shire alt-country outfit, Hazel & The Thief announce their much-anticipated debut release, ‘The Olden Days’, available now to stream.
‘The Olden Days’ is a nod to childhood nostalgia, when the days were long and carefree and filled with innocence.
Lead singer and songwriter Hazel explains, “It’s about remembering those happy go-lucky moments, when every day felt like an adventure and the world was our oyster. It’s also about cherishing those special childhood memories.”
‘The Olden Days’ was produced by the star of ABC-TV’s ‘The Recording Studio’ – Matt Fell, a 9 times Golden Guitar winner and ARIA award winner who also lends his talents on guitar, bass, and keys. Joining them on the track is powerhouse rhythm section Josh Schuberth (drums) and Luke Moller (fiddle)– both seasoned musicians who have played on countless recordings including Felicity Urquhart and Josh Cunningham, Adam Swift, Fanny Lumsden, Troy Cassar-Daley, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Missy Higgins and Lana Del Rey.
Produced in Matt’s home studio in Tasmania, HAZEL fell in love with the idea of ‘making music surrounded by nature’, venturing to the island state to finally put her lyrics into reality after many years of preparing for the right moment to tell her stories.
Since exploding on to the alt-country scene, HAZEL & The Thief have gone from strength to strength, showcasing their vibrant yet honest songwriting and gaining the attention of influential tastemakers and performing with the likes of Karise Eden, Sunday Lemonade, Weeping Willows, Charm of Finches & Ella Hooper. Step into the world of Hazel & The Thief, where the storytelling traditions of country and folk meet the raw energy of 90’s rock. Immerse yourself in the haunting melodies, the heartfelt lyrics, and the magnetic presence that define this extraordinary artist. Prepare to be captivated, uplifted, and inspired.
‘The Olden Days’ is a taster from the forthcoming HAZEL & The Thief debut EP due for release early 2025. “Unleash your inner child and let the dance floor become your playground once again as we take you on a memorable journey,” says Hazel.
Q&A – Hazel with Aly Cook
- Who are your main musical influences? I grew up listening to Slim Dusty, Jewel, Kasey Chambers, Alison Krauss, Eva Cassidy and The Chicks. I’ve always been influenced by the stories behind the lyrics.
- What does your music say about you? My music is very honest, funny, lyrical and energetic! I’m not one to sit down for long. I love a good dance and I’m very passionate about nature and our Aussie culture. This is very present through my songs and personality.
- What are your plans for any future releases? I’ve got a bunch of high energy songs ready to go! Songs about love, alpacas, storms and flooding rain! I’ve also got a song about dancing on tables! I’ll continue to produce, release music and perform with a band. I can’t wait to finally get them out into the world.
- Are you planning any videos for your music? Yes I sure am. I have been busy working on multiply music videos. My single ‘The Olden Days’ has got some bareback horse riding! I also had the job of re-decorating a bedroom as if it was back in the 90’s. That was a lot of fun! I collected lots of old things.
- What are your ambitions as a songwriter and musician from here? It’s to produce quality songs with great stories. I look forward to travelling Australia and performing in old pubs, halls and towns telling stories to those who may not always get the opportunity to experience live music.
- What is your biggest musical challenge? – I’ve been a mum since I was 19. Many of these years a solo mum! My biggest challenge has been juggling all the mother duties while growing my musical career.
- Where was your current project recorded? Over in Tasmania with the fabulous Matt Fell. And the experience of recording as well as exploring the beautiful state was absolute heaven! Stunning!
- Do you sing in the shower? What songs? OMG! Yess! All the time. I’ve written at least 4 songs in The Show! That’s where all the creativity stems from !
- If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be and your superhero name? Teleportation. So, I can close my eyes and then arrive to place I’m thinking about. And my super hero name would be…..Boomerang
- What was the last thing you dressed up as for fancy dress? A 90’s punk rocker for a 40th birthday party. The theme was 80’s & 90’s.
- What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night? Lamb roast for dinner and sticky date pudding with thick cream, for dessert! YUMMY!
- If you had to describe yourself as a flavour, what would it be? I’d taste like a NERD. Those little lollies! A party in ya mouth!
- If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself? Don’t worry about what other people think of you. Don’t be afraid of judgement and enjoy the journey and focus less on the end result.
