The Government is moving to tighten oversight of homeschooling following the Tom Phillips inquiry, with recommendations including checks with Police and the Ministry for Children, more information about parents and regular reviews of exemptions.
Cynthia Hancox, an advisor to the National Council of Home Educators NZ, said some changes now appear “likely inevitable,” but their final shape has not yet been decided.
She said the group will push for any new requirements to be “as limited, reasonable and proportionate as possible”.

Homeschooling is a manifestation of parents total lost faith in the government “education” system. Juvenile vaccine uptake is at an all time low; also a manifestation of loss of trust in the “health” system. Just saying distrust in your government is not limited to one department.

While I agree the state has been intentionally interfering with parents rights, all parents are not created equal. Some parents are not intelligent enough to educate their own children.
Some oversight is needed to ensure a child has the necessary knowledge, abilities, skills and dedication to do better. Little minds are influenced by ideology. If that ideology isn’t helpful or useful, it may cause difficulties for that childs life.
It is more than a curriculum. In recent years the state has been influential in matters like the COVID pandemic and vaccine mandates. As we now know, that type of policy hasn’t been truthful. Evident by the ACC compensation payouts, it has caused harm and division.
This next bit might sound racist to some, but it should be said that as a multi cultural society, some cultures and individuals are not equipped ot practical enough to get the job done. Some can be unhelpful..
Children who attend school soon workout who is of good character and who is not. Its just part of growing up.
Sport is another thing that has been overlooked. Children competing or playing as part of a team builds fellowship and creates competition to better themselves. Many have been a lifelong support for each other.
There is just so much more children get from interacting with other children. Working out who is reliable and who isn’t. Who is honest and who is a trickster. These are helpful skills.
Long has it been since I attended a school. You would be right to call me an old fart, stuck in the past. That was then and this is now and I don’t understand. As a core principle you are taking away such things I truly believe are necessary for the young by not allowing children to mix with other children.
