KiwiRail is offering voluntary redundancy to all staff as part of a restructuring effort aimed at reducing costs and reshaping the business.

In an email to employees, Chief People and Communications Officer Andrew Norton explained the move is intended to improve resource use and maintain competitiveness.

This follows months of proposed job cuts and cost-reduction measures, including plans to axe more than 50 roles in Interislander’s operations and further reductions at its Napier and Palmerston North depots.

KiwiRail CEO Peter Reidy stated that while the redundancies were a difficult decision, the transformation plan is essential to simplify operations, improve customer service, and meet financial expectations.

The organisation is working with unions to explore options like redeployment.

Applications for redundancy are open for two weeks, with decisions expected in November.

  1. Simplify operations, improve customer service, and meet financial expectations should be the Modis operandi from the corporate state as a matter of course, don’t you think?
