Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced that Auckland’s train system will face up to 96 days of full closures until January 2026 to allow for critical upgrades in preparation for the City Rail Link (CRL).

The first closure will occur from December 27 to January 28, followed by another shutdown from April 12 to April 22 around Easter.

In addition trains will operate at reduced capacity on various days throughout the year, adding up to 53 partial closure days.

Brown, along with acting Auckland Mayor Desley Simpson, said the disruptions were unavoidable to enable CRL’s completion, supported by a $200 million investment to enhance the network’s resilience and performance.

The extensive work planned by KiwiRail includes replacing aging track foundations, strengthening infrastructure in South Auckland, improving drainage and weather resistance, and upgrading track systems, signals, and power supplies.

Closures were to coincide with public and school holidays as much as possible to help minimise commuter impact.
