New Zealand battled to 291-7 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test against England at The Oval, with Tom Blundell’s half-century and an unbeaten late contribution from Glenn Phillips helping the tourists post a competitive total.
After England won the toss and elected to bowl under overcast conditions, the Black Caps made a series of promising starts but failed to convert them into major scores. Blundell top-scored with 51, while Daryl Mitchell added 44 before falling after being given an early reprieve. Phillips survived a hostile spell from returning fast bowler Jofra Archer to finish unbeaten on 49.
England, playing without captain Ben Stokes and seamer Gus Atkinson, fielded a reshaped side led by Joe Root. Debutant Sonny Baker impressed with 2-63, while Jacob Bethell claimed two late wickets with his left-arm spin.
Despite favourable batting conditions, New Zealand will rue missed opportunities after several batters failed to capitalise on solid starts. However, with Phillips still at the crease and wickets in hand, the Black Caps remain well placed heading into day two of the series-deciding Test.
