A 20-year-old woman from Te Puke tragically died from hypoxia after inhaling helium at her daughter’s first birthday party in September 2022.

Despite existing small-print warnings on the helium canister, the coroner highlighted the risks of inhaling helium, which can displace oxygen in the lungs and cause fatal consequences.

The coroner called for stronger, prominently displayed warnings, recommending bold labels stating “DO NOT INHALE – RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH” to prevent similar incidents in the future.
