Confidential council papers found in old mayoral desk from the dump

Wellington City Council is investigating after a member of the public discovered hundreds of confidential documents hidden in an old mayoral desk purchased from the local tip shop.

The council said it was treating the matter “extremely seriously,” working with legal and privacy experts as well as contractors involved in disposing of Town Hall furniture to determine how the lapse occurred.

Officials have contacted the individual who found the documents and notified the Privacy Commissioner. The Town Hall building has been closed since 2013 for earthquake strengthening.
