Police will have an increased and highly visible presence across Napier this Saturday as a large gathering is expected for a headstone unveiling ceremony, Hawke’s Bay Area Commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore says.
The event, scheduled for 1pm at Wharerangi Lawn Cemetery in Poraiti, is likely to attract significant numbers, including attendees travelling from outside the region, some of whom are known to be gang members.
Inspector Sycamore said police would take a firm approach to any breaches of the Gangs Act and would not tolerate dangerous driving, disorderly behaviour, or disturbances of the peace.
“At the heart of this gathering is a grieving family. Our goal is to reassure people, maintain a visible presence, keep the peace, and ensure the safety of everyone,” he said.
Following the ceremony at the cemetery, a hākari will be held at a Napier marae later in the afternoon. Police are urging the public to report any illegal behaviour immediately by calling 111, or to make after-the-fact reports online or via the 105 non-emergency line.
