Police say the suspect in a shooting at the Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island — identified as Robert Dorgan, who also used the name ‘Roberta’ and the surname Esposito — died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after the attack that killed two people and injured three others.
Authorities believe the shooting was targeted and may have stemmed from a family dispute. Gunfire broke out during a high school ice hockey game, triggering panic as players and spectators fled, while a bystander’s intervention may have helped bring the incident to a rapid end.
Dorgan is said to have been a cross-dresser who recently started to call himself ‘Roberta’.
Witnesses described chaotic and frightening scenes as families searched for loved ones and paramedics performed CPR in the stands, as state officials expressed grief over another major violent incident in Rhode Island.
