Crowd wrecks Ukrainian conscription vehicle as draft tensions erupt (Video)

A confrontation between residents and military recruitment officers erupted in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil on Tuesday evening (local time), leaving a conscription vehicle badly damaged and prompting police to deploy reinforcements.

According to police, officers from Ukraine’s Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC) were checking a military-age man’s enlistment documents on Lesya Kurbasa Street when a crowd gathered around their Nissan X-Trail, struck the vehicle and confronted personnel, leading to a wider scuffle.

Videos circulating online reportedly show residents surrounding police and military vehicles as uniformed officers, some wearing balaclavas, moved into the area. Recruitment authorities said one officer was hospitalised and several others were injured, while police alleged some people in the crowd may have carried objects resembling bats and knives.

The incident comes amid mounting controversy over Ukraine’s mobilisation campaign and allegations of heavy-handed recruitment tactics, popularly dubbed “busification” when men are detained in public and transported to recruitment centres. Similar confrontations have recently occurred in Lviv, including an incident in which protesters overturned a recruitment vehicle.

Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets told lawmakers in May that his office had received more than 6,000 complaints concerning mobilisation-related rights violations, citing allegations including unlawful force and beatings, while confrontations involving recruitment personnel have also resulted in several fatal stabbings.
