Australian astronomer Greg Quicke, known affectionately as ‘Space Gandalf,’ has died at the age of 62.
Quicke, from Broome in Western Australia, gained widespread recognition in the UK through his appearances on the BBC’s Stargazing Live alongside Professor Brian Cox. With his distinctive white beard and practical approach to astronomy, he complemented Cox’s theoretical perspective. Quicke’s contributions to popular science included the ABC series A Stargazer’s Guide to the Cosmos and several books. Additionally, he was a beloved tour guide, sharing his passion for the night sky with approximately 100,000 participants over 28 years.
Quicke, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2023, left a lasting impact on those who experienced his “astro tours” and followed his work.
Cox expressed his sadness at Quicke’s passing, praising his colleague’s poetic reflections on astronomical events. Tributes have poured in from those who admired Quicke’s ability to communicate complex scientific concepts with warmth and enthusiasm. Western Australian journalist Sam Tomlin and the tourism organisation Destination Broome highlighted his significant contributions to the community and his unique ability to connect people with the cosmos.
