The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the first-ever pill version of the weight-loss drug Wegovy, marking a major shift in obesity treatment and offering an alternative to injections.
The once-daily tablet, developed by Novo Nordisk, is designed to deliver the same weight-loss results as the injectable form, with clinical trials showing an average reduction of 16.6% in body weight and around one third of participants losing 20% or more.
The pill is expected to launch in the United States in early January 2026 and is likely to strengthen Novo Nordisk’s position in the highly competitive weight-loss market, where it faces strong rivalry from other pharmaceutical firms.
The announcement boosted investor confidence, with the company’s shares jumping sharply in after-hours trading.
