A digital medication management system in New Zealand has been taken offline after unauthorised activity resulted in patient records being altered, including some incorrectly marked as deceased.
MediMap, a platform used across aged residential care, disability services, hospices and community healthcare settings to manage medication prescribing and administration, detected the issue about 1.30pm on Sunday.
The company confirmed that parts of its system were accessed without authorisation, leading to changes in demographic information such as patient names, dates of birth, prescribers, care locations and resident status. In response, MediMap immediately placed the platform into maintenance mode and engaged external cyber security specialists to investigate while ‘prioritising patient safety’.
Healthcare providers using the system have reverted to manual medication management processes to ensure continuity of care while the outage remains in place. Health New Zealand is working with MediMap to assess the scope of the incident, which has also been reported to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and Police.
MediMap said investigations into the extent of the data impact are ongoing and a staged, secure restoration of the platform will occur once it is safe to do so.

Oh really? Another one? So data stored on the internet is not secure?
Are we surprised?
