Sainsbury’s and Matalan have issued an urgent recall of the Beeline Belly Bar, a flower-themed body jewellery item, after tests revealed dangerous levels of nickel that could cause severe allergic reactions.
The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards warned that the product poses a significant chemical risk, particularly when in prolonged contact with skin.
Customers are advised to stop using the belly bar immediately and return it to stores for a full refund, no receipt required. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) highlighted that nickel is a known “skin sensitiser” capable of triggering allergic contact dermatitis, emphasizing the importance of avoiding prolonged skin exposure to the material.
The recall comes as part of a stringent effort to ensure consumer safety, with Beeline, the product’s manufacturer, apologising for any inconvenience and emphasizing that product safety remains a top priority.
The UKHSA noted that while nickel-related skin issues were more common before regulations limited its use, the affected belly bar exceeded legal limits.
Customers experiencing redness or a rash are urged to stop wearing the jewellery immediately and consult with Beeline for further assistance.
